Contact Improvisation
A week long intensive training with RAY CHUNG

PATH OF LEARNING

What was your first encounter with Contact Improvisation?
Was it in a class? At a jam? Seeing a performance? Watching a video? A friend shared it with you? How did you go about beginning to learn CI?
All of us are born with the tools, resources, and abilities to learn--whether we wanted to or not-----about the world around us and how to interact with it. This learning takes place mostly unconsciously at first, and more mindfully as time passes. Movement and perception are inseparably interlinked and enable us to learn about our environment. How we might have learned Contact Improvisation, is not unlike how we learned about the world growing up. This workshop focuses on learning and uncovering the processes that enable us to learn, and continue to learn, while trusting in, and being guided by, our intuition, knowledge, and intelligence. Which physical, perceptual, cognitive skills are necessary to become accomplished in the practice of CI? Focusing on specific skills and how best to learn them efficiently, effortlessly, and playfully, we will contrast and compare, mix and match various modalities and practices to synthesize new ways of learning familiar ones. We will tune into, identify, and support our individual learning styles, and how best to facilitate the ongoing process of expanding and increasing our range of skills and possibilities in the dance. Also, to enable ourselves to support this process with others in various settings or situations. We'll research and utilize methods inspired by cognitive science, radical constructivism, various body-mind practices (martial arts, Authentic Movement, Shiatsu, functional anatomy), as well as semiotics, and design, to name but a few. A trans-disciplinary systems (holistic) approach to learning is emphasized and encouraged.
